The Good Ole days

The Good Ole days

by Rosemary Clarke

When things they cost a whole lot less
And wages seemed much higher
When we weren't in such a bad mess
And there were real coal fires
When everybody smartened up
And love was everywhere
When England won the World Cup
And everybody cared.
When fish and chips were all around
And bells rung from church steeples
I've asked, and this is what I've heard
From many many people
It's not the years we really miss
Not all the numbers there
Or even a certain way of life
It's friends who always care.
When life is really hard for us
We can't get off the ground
The thing we must remember is
Good folk are all around.
So hold our hearts out,
help the poor the needy and the sick
When someone's having trouble
Don't walk away so quick.
Remember all over the world
We are the very same
Friends across all nations
And from all our mums we came.

  2. So, I wasn't found under a gooseberry bush, I knew my mum wasn't telling the truth. This poem took me back a few years, some were not so good just after the war. However peace-time brought friendship and caring, hopefully, after the defeat of Covid we will return to those days. Nice one Rosemary.
